Community Programs Department, High School Team Partner to Bring Youth Field Hockey to Summit

New Youth Field Hockey Program draws 60 Summit girls, grades 1-7

SUMMIT, NJ - This Fall, the Summit Department of Community Programs (DCP) and Summit High School’s (SHS) Varsity Coach, Jen Schwarzenbek, launched a 10-week Field Hockey program for girls in grades 1-7.  The program is already boasts an enrollment of approximately 60 girls.

Coach Schwarzenbek, Coach Sweeney, Coach Killeen and several of Schwarzebek’s SHS Varsity Team are teaching the girls basic skills through fun drills and games. 

Field Hockey is a growing sport that encourages physical fitness and emphasizes teamwork and strategic thinking  Summit has joined other area communities that have Field Hockey development programs for girls in elementary school.  Schwarzenbek is excited by the high level of interest in Field Hockey among the younger girls. and views this as a positive sign for the future of Summit’s Middle School and High School Field Hockey programs.

“I am so excited with the turn out, and I look forward to watching these girls grow and develop as players. The future looks bright,” said Schwarzenbek. 

USA Field Hockey provided sticks, balls, cones and the curriculum to Summit’s DCP through its Field Hockey FUNdamentals program.  The organization is committed to exposing the sport to many and inspiring participation for all.
