SUMMIT, NJ - Congregation Ohr Shalom - Summit Jewish Community Center (COS-SJCC) will celebrate completion of its GreenFaith Certification, becoming the first house of worship to complete such Certification in Union County. The process is a multi-pronged program designed to guide houses of worship into become more environmentally conscious and more environmentally active.
GreenFaith Executive Director, Reverend Fletcher Harper, GreenFaith Executive Director, will be the guest speaker at COS-SJCC services April 22.
Over the past three years, in addition to completing the complex array of certification requirements, Congregation Ohr Shalom also helped found GreenFaith Circle, an interfaith network of congregations within Summit. The five participating congregations work together to effect environmental education and action within the community. This began as a combined effort with the Summit Interfaith Council and was the first GreenFaith Circle in the country.
Part of Saturday’s worship service -- which will provide an opportunity to learn about Judaism's reverence for the Earth -- will take place outdoors (weather permitting), so attendees are invited to dress casually and wear shoes that can get muddy.
During the 'Earth-friendly' kiddush luncheon following services, there will be visual displays of Congregation Ohr Shalom’s multi-year journey through the GreenFaith Certification as well as plans for an outdoor prayer / meditation garden that is being created as an Eagle Scout project by a Congregation member. These presentations are designed to show how far the Congregation has come in reducing its footprint on the Earth. A hands-on recycling activity will be held immediately after the meal.
Shabbat services begin at 9:30 am, with the special program beginning around 10 a.m.. The community is welcome to attend. Congregation Ohr Shalom - Summit Jewish Community Center is located at 67 Kent Place Boulevard. For additional information, visit summitjcc.org or call 908-273-8130.
