"Discover Summit Arts"

Celebrate the arts in Summit, New Jersey.   Discover Summit Arts” is a week-long festival June 23 – 29, 2013 and was the inspiration of Lyle Brehm and Janet Whitman, both Summit residents and art enthusiasts and co-founders for this community event.  According to Lyle,” Summit is a small city that combines arts, culture and business in a way that many others cannot.  We’d like to feature our town as a destination for the arts in a week-long program of festivities.”

As Janet adds, “We don’t intend to create events, but to coordinate and promote the numerous arts offerings already planned for the last week of June, and to encourage participation by all interested organizations and businesses that value art as a core value of society.  It also will give Summit businesses an opportunity to attract new customers.”  Numerous events are already on the calendar, and as organizations hear about the opportunity to feature their offerings, the schedule of events is growing rapidly.

The festival will feature art, music, theatre, film, live entertainment and other activities.  Kicking off the first day is the Fine Arts and Crafts Fair, followed by art exhibitions and lectures, the Minuetto Music Festival, artwork by local artists, live art demonstrations, dance, public art walks, creative art therapies & healing arts, photography, and local theater performances & international films.  Local restaurants and shops will be encouraged to participate.  A few known top celebrity chefs from New Jersey will also participate as culinary foods are a delicious form of the arts.

“Our community art programs are rich and offer activities of interest to all ages”, states Janet Whitman.  Planned by a collaboration of arts organizations, businesses and volunteers, our goal is to highlight numerous local artists, art resources and opportunities in Summit which enhance downtown as a destination for the arts. People from the Tri-State area will be attracted by the high-quality art, the chance to meet local artists, sample wine and food, and enjoy work in a variety of media.

“The cultural scene is rich in both visual and performing arts and downtown offers numerous opportunities for shopping, dining and entertainment.  We welcome those from town and neighboring areas to visit us”, states Summit’s Mayor Ellen Dickson.

Why “Discover Summit Arts?”   You discover ('uncover') something that is already there - something that has existed but is generally unknown.  Looking at Summit past and present, we can help others discover the gems in our artistic community.  Summit is proud of its Summit Symphony Orchestra, established almost 75 years ago, and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey has been a strong proponent of the arts and a cultural center since 1933. In addition, the Summit School District continues to reap awards and public acclaim for their outstanding music, visual and performing arts programs.  Arts at the Reeves Reed Arboretum include exhibitions, lectures and jazz.

Musical programs offered by our churches, Summit Chorale, Concord Singers, private and public schools and others are too numerous to mention.  In addition, last June saw the inauguration of the Minuetto Music Festival, produced by the Continuo Arts Foundation.

Performing arts venues include The Playhouse, Stony Hill Players, and new to Summit is Dreamcatcher Repertory Theater, a professional Actors Equity ensemble company located at the Oakes Center.

Some of these venues offer enrichment programs for children in the summer such as Kaleidoscope at The Playhouse, Continuo Arts’ Summer Musical Theater Conservatory, Pebble Players at Stony Hill, and Summer Theatre Conservatory at Dreamcatcher. We are also fortunate to have a professional story teller, Jeslyn Wheeless, at our public library.

There is also appreciation of art in our business community, and it is growing: Meredith’s Arteriors, Trouvaille, Paperfolio, Helen’s Books and Gifts, Mondo, Joni Rose Fine Arts, Yolanda Fundori Fine Arts, The Grand Summit Hotel, Historic Twin Maples, and many others.

Discover Summit Arts” can help the community become recognized and designated as an arts destination, so if you are looking for a travel destination this summer, come to Summit!  A calendar will be published in early 2013 on our new facebook page.  We look forward to community participation.

Fear of Rising Rates? Remember The Reason You Own Bonds

If the current interest environment has you concerned about your bond portfolio, remember why you are investing in bonds.  The role bonds, or fixed income, play in a portfolio is not solely based on performance.  Bonds are used to offer stability, particularly when stock market volatility is rising. Rate hikes can dampen bond performance, but keep perspective on how rising rates impact ...

Cluelessly Clueless

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.

Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning ...
