The Discover Summit Arts planning committee is pleased to announce the performing arts lineup for its first annual festival. The festival will take place June 23rd-29th in venues throughout downtown Summit, New Jersey. Local artists from the Performing, Visual, and Culinary & Healing Arts will be participating.
Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre, the Summit Playhouse and Stony Hill players will collaborate for “An Evening of Summit Theatre”. These three organizations will combine their talent to present a collage of performances to entertain current and new audiences alike. All of the companies, one professional and two community organizations, are based in Summit and offer full seasons of plays, musicals and youth programs.
New to Summit, the Film Society of Summit will feature a film screening and filmmaker Q&A session. The opening night screening in September 2012 was an independently produced documentary, followed by a Q & A with the filmmaker who came from California to discuss the filmmaking process with our audience. Since then, the Film Society has screened dramas, comedies, musical documentaries, foreign films and shorts. In January, Academy-Award winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, a Summit resident, spoke to a full house following the screening of his latest documentary, Mea Maxima Culpa. The festival offers a perfect opportunity for the public to get a preview of how the Society will further enrich Summit’s rich cultural landscape.
The Minuetto Music Festival is a week-long program of music, master classes and rehearsals, featuring a series of three evening concerts: The Milton Cross Young Artist Showcase introducing the Milton Cross & Rising Star Young Artist Winners selected from applicants across the nation. Performing the second concert is the Canadian sensation DESTINO, whose cross-over Opera to Popular style has been hailed around the world, and the Minuetto Festival Finale Concert with the Festival Symphonic Chorus, Young Artist Soloists and Orchestra will perform selections by Rossini, Vaughn Williams and more.
According to Candace Wicke, Artistic Director, “The first season of the Minuetto Music Festival was an unprecedented success and we are looking forward to our second Festival with great anticipation. Many young vocal artists from the U.S. and Canada are currently auditioning for the Young Artist showcase and registrations from local singers are now being accepted to be part of our Symphonic Chorus. Over 85 singers from the tri-state area joined the Minuetto Symphonic Chorus last year and we look forward to working again with them and many new chorus members this year. We are certainly pleased to be a part of “Discover Summit Arts’, working together to keep music and culture alive and thriving in Summit and our surrounding communities”.
For children in kindergarten through 5th grade, award winning folksingers and storytellers Jeslyn and Ben Wheeless will present “Join In: Tales and Tunes from Many Cultures”. Based on songs from their new CD, the original songs and raps tie in with stories told by memory in the oral tradition. This event will be held at the Summit Free Public Library.
For adults 18 and over who have interest in authentic tango lessons, we invite you to join Carolina Zokalski and Diego Di Falco, Tony Award nomenees for Best Choreography, of Authentic Argentine Tango School in Summit. They are performing a TangoFest featuring Tango movies, classes, talks, music and performances. No experience is necessary, and a partner is not required.
Details for the above events, including ticket information, will become available as the festival approaches. In addition to the above events, there will be a full program for the Visual Arts and the Culinary and Healing Arts. “Discover Summit Arts” was co-founded by Summit residents and art enthusiasts Lyle Brehm and Janet Whitman.
