A three year ESL student, Yorleny, shares her story and the support system she received through the ESL program at The Connection. After her first year, Yorleny writes; “When I came here, I didn’t know the culture, the language or the customs. It was a hard time. I felt frustrated and this affected my family directly. Our life was stressful and sad. We were isolated. It was a hard time for me to communicate at the school, the doctor’s office, and everywhere else”.

Yorleny was recommended by a friend to take ESL classes at The Connection. She reflects, “ actual teacher, Jean, is the best teacher in my world because she doesn’t just teach me English, she helps me with the language and maybe more importantly she helps me to assimilate the culture and the customs. The Connection helps me get confident in myself, to believe in the good intention from the people and how to interact with the Americans. Here at The Connection, I have a sense of belonging to something. I have my little family here. This is a second home. I’m thankful for the excellent opportunities that I have received here.”

Three years later, Yorleny’s life has changed drastically. She says she can be more involved in her children’s school, and she doesn’t stress about communicating at the doctor’s office or bank.  She is now so confident in her English that she can help others translate to or from Spanish. Yorleny became a certified Yoga Instructor from a Yoga institute in Manhattan, and her tutors and instructors at The Connection couldn’t be more proud of her.
