FC Motown Opens Season May 9 v. Red Bulls U23 at Drew University; Team Adds Former MLS and U.S. International Player Hunter Freeman

Hunter Freeman

FC Motown, the newest soccer team to join the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), will open the 2018 season with a home match against the NY Red Bulls U23. Kick-off at Ranger Stadium at Drew University is set for 7 p.m.

The team is looking to build off an excellent finish last season, in which they were one of the top 70 teams in the entire country. After bringing back key players from last year's team, as well as making signings this off season, FC Motown sees the sky as the limit for how far they can make a run this season

Coach Sacir Hot had the following to say about the match up "We are thrilled to be playing a PDL powerhouse like Red Bulls U23 in the Lamar Hunt Cup at Drew University. The 2017 Red Bulls U23 team placed an astounding nine player on pro rosters this year. I came up through the Red Bulls Academy and have fond memories of it".

The NPSL is a national league with approximately 100 teams from coast to coast. It includes some of the best soccer clubs in this country including Detroit City, Chattanooga, Jacksonville Armada and Miami United.

"It will be quite a game and we will be ready for it," said Hot.

Hunter Freeman Joins Roster

Hunter Freeman has joined FC Motown, the experienced right back bringing a wealth of experience in MLS and Europe as well as the NASL to his new team.

A veteran right back who helped the United States qualify for the Olympics in 2008, Freeman spent the last couple of seasons split between Miami FC and the New York Cosmos. He also spent several seasons in MLS, including helping key the New York Red Bulls to an MLS Cup appearance in 2007, still the organization’s only appearance in MLS Cup.

Freeman brings a wealth of experience to FC Motown, who are set for their first season in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).

“It is exciting to come back to New Jersey and join an ambitious team like FC Motown. Their Lamar Hunt Cup qualification was a huge factor in the decision,” Freeman said.  “I feel that I can lend my experience from the Final 8 run with Miami FC last year to help us achieve results.”

In addition to being a solid defender and aggressive in his individual defending and marking, Freeman also is an asset offensively. He moves well into the attacking end and is known for his long, over-lapping runs.  Freeman is also a specialist at set pieces.

“Having an experienced player like Hunter is big for our club as we grow,” FC Motown head coach Sacir Hot said. “Not only does he help by bringing big experiences in MLS, Europe and on the international level, he also will help our squad immensely by being a veteran leader and an example to follow. He’s a true master craftsman of this game.”
