Governor's Executive Order Will See Flags Lowered to Half-Staff June 5 in Honor of Summit Detective Tarentino

TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Governor Chris Christie today signed Executive Order No. 226, which orders all State buildings to fly flags at half-staff on Monday, June 5, in recognition of the life and in mourning of the passing of Summit Police Detective Matthew Tarentino.

“Detective Tarentino was a loving husband, father, son, and brother, whose memory will live in the hearts of his family, friends, community, and fellow members of the Summit Police Department,” said Governor Chris Christie. “He served his State with courage, professionalism, and commitment to the finest ideals and traditions of the Summit Police Department. It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of Detective Tarentino, and we extend our sincerest sympathy to his family and loved ones.”

Raised and residing in Somerville, New Jersey, Detective Tarentino graduated from Immaculata High School in Somerville, and later went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications with a minor in Spanish from Rutgers University. Detective Tarentino joined the Summit Police department in 2012, having previously served as an officer in the Rutgers Police Department and the Bound Brook Police Department.

He was assigned to the Community Policing Unit, a vital Unit that made him the Summit Police Department’s D.A.R.E Program Officer. Along with the Summit Police Department, Detective Tarentino was recently honored by the New Jersey Attorney General as the 2017 recipient of the Attorney General’s Outstanding Community Policing Award. On May 30, Detective Tarentino tragically passed away following a motor vehicle accident.
