SUMMIT, NJ - Gymnast Alysia Lopez and football's Jackson Tyler have been named  Summit High School Athletes of the Week, presented by TAP into Summit, for the week ending October 2.

Each week throughout the school athletic year, an athlete or athletes will be honored for distinguishing themselves in the arena of competition, in the classroom, and for demonstrating exemplary, Hilltopper-caliber sportsmanship and leadership qualities.

Senior captain Lopez has had the best start to a season in what has been a stellar career for the Gymnastic team, competing in All-Around in all six of their meets, and setting two new school records, including a 9.35 individual vault score, and then breaking the All-Around mark with a 36.75 against Somerville September 26.

Lopez has already qualified to compete at the NJSIAA North II Sectional Meet on all four events and in the All-Around.

Sophomore quarterback Tyler had a monster day for the Varsity Football team against Scotch Plains-Fanwood, pacing an offensive attack that rolled up 54 points. Against the Raiders, Tyler -- despite starting just the third game in his Varsity career -- racked up 230 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, and threw for 220 yards and three more touchdowns as The Maroon & White stayed unbeaten at 4-0.

Let the Games Begin

I am truly awed by the Olympics.  Watching these superb young athletes on TV inspires me to renew my membership to the gym and pursue my lifelong dream of taking home the gold.

The problem is that in my deluded head, I can see actually see myself standing atop the podium.  I am wrapped in a puffy designer ski coat with a huge piece of bling slung around my neck ...
