On July 1, the Hickory Tree Chorus presented, via Zoom, two $1,000 Diane Cecala Memorial Scholarships to two extraordinarily talented high school graduates.

Emma Kaiven is a graduate from Warren Hills High School, where she was a member of the Select Choir, Advanced Choir, and Rock and Pop choir, singing the parts of Soprano 1 and 2 throughout her four years. She has been a part of a majority of school productions and had the opportunity to play the roles of Morticia in ‘The Addams Family’, Rosemary in ‘How to Succeed in Business…’, Miss Honey in ‘Matilda’, and Chava in ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. She served as president of the drama club. Emma has also competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition and received 2nd place in both the Song and Aria and Musical Theatre divisions. In the fall, Emma will attend Catholic University of America and will major in Musical Theatre.

Christine Tanko is a graduate of Watchung Hills Regional High School Class of 2020. She was heavily involved in their choral and theater programs, being a member of the Advanced Chorus and Select Vocal Ensembles for all four years. Alongside that, she has been a part of seven plays and musicals at WHRHS, some of her favorites including Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls, Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible, and Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof. She participated in the NJMEA All-state Choir during her sophomore and junior years. One of her proudest achievements was being awarded Best Lead Actress in a Drama in the 2019 Montclair State Foxy Awards. Christine will be studying music education, her concentration being soprano voice, at Montclair State University.
