SUMMIT, NJ - Janet Whitman, former two-term Mayor of Summit from 1988 - 1995, has been named “Person of the Year” by the Summit / New Providence Rotary. Known to area residents as Summit’s first woman mayor, Whitman's influence has lasted far beyond her years as the Hilltop City's top elected official.
A celebration will be held at the Grand Summit Hotel April 14, from 6 - 8 p.m. honoring Whitman’s achievements, and the spirit of community pride and accomplishment they brought and enhanced.
Whitman was highly regarded, no matter one's party affiliation, for her ability to cooperate and collaborate while providing guidance and tolerance of all opinions, her message to the community driven by Summit’s best interests.
“We are honored to have Mayor Whitman as our award recipient and delighted to provide this opportunity for area residents to share memories and extend personal wishes that evening,” said Rotary president, Reagan Burkholder, who worked with Whitman for eight years as city administrator and seven years on the Summit Public Art initiative.
The recognition event will support the Rotary’s scholarship program, which benefits high school seniors living in Summit and New Providence. For more information, visit snprotary.org.
