SUMMIT, NJ - In 2002, the year the Summit Policemen's Benevolent Association (PBA) and Summit Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association (FMBA) began their Toys For Tots campaign, the toys collected fit in the back of a pickup truck. Twelve consecutive years down the road, the 2014 toy collection necessitated -- and filled -- a full size U-Haul truck.
Toys For Tots is the well-known United States Marine Corps Reserve program which accepts new, unwrapped toys for distribution to needy children. The toys collected in Summit were transported to the Marine Corps warehouse in Woodbridge.
The Summit PBA and Summit FMBA have been co-sponsoring the toy drive since 2002, and the generosity from the public has increased every year. In addition to the generous donations of toys, the program was supported by:
- Arch Sunoco, which donated the use of the U-Haul.
- Colonial Appliance, which donated the collection boxes.
-Summit Post Office, Starbucks, Bouras Properties, Lakeland Bank, Peapack-Gladstone Bank, Summit City Hall, Summit Fire Department, and the Summit Recreation Center, all of which served as official toy collection points for the annual toy drive.
