Kent Place School Named Charter Member of Green Schools Purchasing Consortium

Kent Place School, an independent, non-sectarian day school for girls and young women has been named by Sterling Planet, the nation’s leading retail renewable energy provider, a charter member of the Green Schools Purchasing Consortium.

Kent Place is one of only 28 other member schools in the country.

As part of this initiative by the Green Schools Alliance (GSA), Kent Place and other member schools and have agreed to purchase a total of nearly 25 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy for 2014. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, this equates to the annual electricity use of more than 2,100 average U.S. homes and has an environmental benefit comparable to taking nearly 3,400 cars off the road for a year.

By continuing Kent Place’s relationship with the GSA, Kent Place also joined the Green Power Partnership (GPP), which supported the formation of the GSA Consortium. This voluntary program encourages organizations to use green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use. This year, Kent Place will be purchasing its Green Energy through the GSA and GPP.

Kent Place’s sustainability efforts do not end there. Kent Place participated in the Green Cup Challenge (GCC) this year, which is a project of the Green Schools Alliance. The GCC is a four-week challenge where schools compete for points by making sure all recyclable materials are thrown away into the correct bins.

“As a school, KPS is committed to authentic sustainable measures on campus,” stated Susan C. Bosland, Head of Kent Place School. “From our Gold LEED building, to our daily routines, we would like for our students to understand and experience the importance of and the positive difference sustainable practices can make for our campus and the world-at-large!”

Dave Carty, Kent Place’s Director of Strategic Initiatives added, “We continue to incorporate the principles and practices of sustainability not only in our power purchases and building design, but also in our day-to-day activities on campus such as maximizing our recycling and minimizing our landfill waste.”

In 2013, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) named Kent Place as one the nation’s leading green power purchasers. Kent Place was ranked No. 25 on the EPA's Top 30 K-12 Schools list of the largest green power users.  Kent Place was the only New Jersey school on the list.
