NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - In honor of Black History Month, the League of Women Voters and the Summit College Club (AAUW) are co-hosting the documentary film "The Underground Railroad" on Sunday, January 21, at 2 p.m. The event will be held at the New Providence Memorial Library, located at 377 Elkwood Avenue, in the Conti Reading Room. A discussion will follow the screening.
The documentary was produced for The History Channel and hosted by actress Alfre Woodard. This film traces the journey to freedom taken by countless slaves, showing how they were guided, protected, and pursued along the way.
The extraordinary story is told through historical documents, visits to important sites, interviews with the descendants of noted abolitionists and commentary from experts. The program is free and the public is invited. Refreshments will be served.
