Where we are today and where we were back in March when the City of Summit’s budget was first introduced are very different places. I wonder what the best way is to rethink and reset those priorities. Thankfully our City staff is outstanding and surely working hard behind the scenes to make sense of these unprecedented times.

As our City prepares to approve tens of millions of dollars in spending at the end of this month, have we thought through how we should be spending valuable taxpayer dollars? Now is a perfect time to deeply scrutinize our operational as well as capital expenditures. There’s a tremendous amount of uncertainty ahead at City Hall as well as around the kitchen tables of Summit’s residents.

I saw a petition in circulation on Facebook that offered a good idea. Let’s have our elected officials and our city staff host a budget workshop where we can understand the assumptions City Hall is now operating under and discuss openly our spending priorities. There is no one right answer but we need an open and honest dialogue to guide us through the uncertainty ahead.
