Yesterday morning, under a beautiful blue sky, over 1000 people participated in the Making a Difference 5k run and 1 mile fun run in downtown Summit. The event honored the late Detective Matthew Tarentino and the proceeds benefited his wife, Vicky, and his three children. I have rarely been more proud of our city and our community. Our community was shocked by the sudden death of Detective Tarentino and we came together to mourn him and support his family. Today we came together again to honor his character and remember his commitment to performing random acts of kindness every day.
The event was sponsored by the Police Athletic League and the primary underwriter was Overlook Hospital. I want to thank them as well as all of the sponsors who provided food, water, and music. Thank you also to the many volunteers and first responders who enabled a smoothly run event. And, of course, thank you to the members of the Summit Police Department, particularly Officer Kathleen Maggiulli, who spearheaded the coordination of the event. We are blessed to live in a community that so deeply cares about fellow residents as well as the men and women who work here.
