NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Communications Officer Michael Mollo is the 2018 recipient of the Mountain Valley Emergency Communications Center's 'Telecommunicator of the Year' honor, as the Shared Dispatch Center Management Board and its Emergency Communications Executive Director Scott W. Ruf recognized several staff for their hard work and dedication.

Every year in April, telecommunications personnel in the public safety community are honored. The week-long event, initially set up in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California, is a time to celebrate and thank those individuals who dedicate their lives to serve the public.

Established in 2014, the City of Summit, the Borough of New Providence, and the Township of Millburn combined their dispatch centers and forming the new Shared Dispatch Center, today known as the Mountain Valley Emergency Communications Center. The Center's primary mission, which is to serve the citizens of New Providence, Summit and Millburn, by acting as a communications link between the citizen who needs an emergency service response, and those law enforcement, fire, and medical response agencies that provide such services without the duplication of staff resources and technology.

Mollo, who started his career as one of the MVECC's very first dispatchers in 2015, was hailed for his positive attitude and willingness to help in whatever capacity is needed as well as his ability to adapt easily to change, qualities which exemplify the many skills and values worthy of this award. Mollo’s co-workers wrote, “He shows compassion and caring in callers' most frantic and troubling situations.” “He treats every caller and co-worker equally and with respect and is always willing to jump in and help during busy times.”

According to Ruf, "On a daily basis Michael carries out our mission and vision by providing the highest levels of service to the residents, first responders and visitors of and to the Borough of New Providence, City of Summit and Township of Millburn and does so with P.R.I.D.E. (Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence)."

Many times these public safety telecommunicators are the first line of assistance when the community calls into the dispatch center. Although they are rarely seen and heard by the public, dispatchers for the various public safety entities are the “behind the scenes” link between those in need and those that can help.
