CHATHAM, NJ - Mayor Bruce Harris announced on Monday night at the Borough of Chatham Council meeting that the planning board recently approved the construction of a 47-unit, four-story apartment building on River Road in Chatham.
There is no timetable for the start of construction on the current site of the Burling Instrument Company located at 16 River Road. The building on the site now will be torn down.
According to Victoria Fife, borough council member, there will be a 15 percent set aside in units to accommodate affordable housing requirements.
"The planning board approved it, but it needs a developer's agreement," Fife said.
The apartment units became possible when the borough rezoned the "M" Districts to allow for a wider variety of businesses and new construction. Both Mayor Harris and Fife both indicated that the design met their approval.
"It's a nice design and the developers were very interested in cooperating with us," Harris said. "Who knows when the construction will start."
