Oratory Prep Track and Field Dominates NJISAA Indoor Championship

SUMMIT, NJ - Oratory Prep High School track and field team dominated the Feb. 10 NJISAA Indoor Championship.

Rookie Coach Anselm LeBourne was very proud of his team for working hard enough to bring home such great results.

“Going into the meet, I wasn’t sure how the kids would have done, but we really put in a lot of hard work,” he said.

The boys took home first place in five events and overall first place as a team with 153 points. The boys included in the five winning events were Matthew Munro in the 55-meter hurdles, Cormac Rada in the 1600 and 800-meter run, Xavier Durham in the 200-meter dash and Sean Conklin in shot put.

LeBourne was particularly impressed with Cormac Rada, captain of the team. Rada had the flu the week before the competition and was only able to practice once before the event. He was also coping with a foot injury, according to LeBourne.

“He came through big time, and he won both of the events,” said LeBourne. As a first year coach, LeBourne wanted to follow in the footsteps of previous coaches at Oratory Prep. He expressed his gratitude to his assistant coach, Kenny Vaughn, for his help. LeBourne was excited to bring home such a big win with the boys for the school. They compete against some of the best schools with a larger athlete pool, he said.

According to LeBourne, it was particularly sweet for him because Oratory’s facilities do not give them luxurious practice spaces. In fact, the school does not have an indoor track. The boys’ determination and hard work was inspiring for him.

“We don’t have an indoor track, so we have to practice outside in 15 degrees,” he said. “There might be a lot of kids more talented than us, but they won’t outwork us.”

LeBourne hopes this meet helps put the school on the map with track and field. He also hopes that this success will propel the boys to more successful track meets in the future, such as the National Indoor Championship.

“They’ve never competed at the Penn Relays. I’d like to see them all come together and compete at the Penn Relays,” he said.

LeBourne looks forward to future track meets with his team and hopes for more hard work and success from the boys.
