Out in the Cold: Summit Commuters Forced to Park Outdoors as Car Dealership Claims Broad Street Garage Covered Parking Spaces

High and Dry: Salerno Duane's new vehicles occupied a high percentage of covered parking spaces in the Broad Street garage.

SUMMIT, NJ - As a blanket of snow, buffeted by gusty winds, descended on the Hilltop City, TAPinto Summit received multiple messages from angry, paying commuters today in light of the shortage of available Broad street garage covered parking spaces, spots that were taken by new vehicles from Summit's Salerno Duane Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram and Ford dealerships.

According to City of Summit spokesperson Amy Cairns, there has been a longstanding courtesy extended by the City's Parking Services Agency to the dealership allowing Salerno Duane to park their vehicles in the Broad Street lot so that their lot can be cleared during snow-related weather events.

"The vehicles are supposed to be brought over in phases as the lot is cleared, however it appears today that more than 100 cars were parked there. This is not an acceptable execution of the arrangement, and the courtesy will no longer be extended. Our priority is that commuters have a place to park, and we apologize to residents for any inconvenience they experienced."

As of 10 a.m., a significant percentage of the spaces on the second and third covered floors were occupied by Salerno Duane vehicles.

Cairns indicated that the vehicles would be removed shortly.
