Did you know over the last five years, our Union County tax bill has grown by over 21% and now represents 30% of our property taxes. Over the same five years our city council has exercised fiscal discipline only increasing their budget by 1.4%. Our schools have shown similar restraint, increasing our school tax by only 4.8%.
Our Union County assessment is now 30% of our budget. It crowds out critical investments we need to make in our municipal services and our schools. As former president of the Summit Taxpayers Association, I've been fighting for lower Union County taxes for years. In March I organized over two dozen Summit residents to attend a Freeholder meeting. The purpose was to raise awareness around this critical issue. By raising awareness, we can create change at the most effective place possible, the ballot box.
SUMMIT HAS REACHED A TIPPING POINT AND NEEDS TO REIN IN UNION COUNTY TAXES. I WILL RAISE PRIVATE FUNDS TO CONDUCT A FORENSIC AUDIT OF THE UNION COUNTY BUDGET. WE NEED TRANSPARENCY TO HOW OUR TAX DOLLARS ARE SPENT.
Additionally, I will work to form a working coalition of elected officials from towns in the western half of Union County (new Providence, Berkeley Heights, Westfield, etc.). Working as one voice will greatly enhance our ability to see a better return on the taxes we send each year to Elizabeth.
Thank you for your support, I humbly ask for your vote Tuesday November 7th.
Mike Wattick is the Republican candidate for Summit Common Council, Ward 2
