SUMMIT, NJ - Ryan O'Malley, Summit High School Class of 2011 -- who was signed to a free agent contract in late April by the Oakland Raiders -- then added to the team's NFL practice squad after training camp, has been signed to the Silver & Black's 53-man active roster.

This afternoon, the team made the announcement, simultaneously placing tight end Lee Smith on the Reserve / Injured List.

"The circumstances of me getting moved up are unfortunate because Lee is great guy and a great teammate, but I am still excited and grateful for this opportunity," said O'Malley., who added, "I am still taking it week by week because if I don't perform they can always find someone who can."

"I'm just ready to capitalize on this great opportunity that has been presented to me. I'm definitely excited, this is something I have dreamed about since I was a little kid."

O'Malley was one of eight players signed to the Raiders' practice squad, and was in uniform and saw game action in all four of the team's preseason games. One of six tight ends that began training camp with the team, he caught two balls for 11 total yards.

In the NFL, practice squads consist of up to 10 players who practice with the team throughout the week but are not eligible to be active on game days. Teams often use practice squads as a way to develop players they feel have potential, investing in them and maintaining a group who are familiar with their system, providing a smooth transition in the event of injuries.

Four of the 10 practice squad spots can be filled by players who had two or more years of experience on an NFL roster, with six weeks practice squad time equaling one full season of practice squad eligibility. A player can spend no more than three seasons on any practice squad.

While a team can pay practice squad players as much as they like, the minimum is $6,900 per week, which would amount to $117,300 if they were on the practice squad for the entire season.

A practice squad player can be signed by another team, providing the signing team adds the player to its 53-man roster. The player can get cut after just one week, but would receive three game checks.  A practice squad player cannot be signed to another team’s practice squad.

O’Malley earned All-Ivy League honors in both 2014 and 2015, while he and his Penn teammates captured the 2015 Ivy League title, a feat he and the Quakers also accomplished in 2012.

In 2015, the 6'7", 265-pound O'Malley caught 20 passes for 202 yards and scored three touchdowns. His longest catch of the year was a 25-yarder, he averaged 10.1 yards per catch, and scored a 14-yard touchdown against Cornell in the Ivy League clincher. For his Quaker career, O’Malley caught 43 balls for 495 yards and nine touchdowns.

O'Malley was a four-year member of the Summit High School Football Team as a wide receiver and defensive end. He was part of the Hilltopper team that captured the State Championship n 2009.

Cluelessly Clueless

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.

Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning ...
