Students look on as the Summit Elks Lodge #1246 Esquire presents service-worn American Flags to Lieutenant Colonel William K. Rapp (Ret.) on the lawn of Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School (LCJSMS) as part of a pre-Memorial Day assembly program remembering the men and women who gave their lives in defending and supporting America's freedoms and which also celebrated the Stars and Stripes.

The annual event included a processional detailing the history of the flag, which included a narrative by LCJSMS students, songs, speakers' remarks, and The Pledge of Allegiance. The ceremony included honor guards from both the Summit Police and Fire Departments.

Once outside, the flags were presented to the Summit Fire Department, which gave them a proper and dignified cremation disposal.
