SUMMIT, NJ - Twenty-four hours after they hammered Westfield 7-1 on the same sheet of ice, the Summit High School Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Team decided to score even more goals against Pingry at the Warninanco Skating Center.
In a game that mirrored several decisive characteristics of their emphatic win over the Blue Devils, the Maroon and White jumped out to a big lead -- 7-0 lead in this case -- behind the molten-hot stick of freshman Leah Rubinshteyn, who followed up her four-goal game the day before with a Hat Trick against Big Blue that drove the Hilltoppers 9-3 win.
It was game over after the opening period, a frame in which Summit bolted to a 5-0 lead behind goals from sophomore Grace Hannigan, junior Emily Sharpe, sophomore Maisie Hiltabrand and two from Rubinshteyn.
Senior Morgen Shung and Rubinshteyn made it 7-up Hilltoppers after two periods of play, and freshman Taylor Cornell and Shung's second of the game rounded out the Summit scoring in the final period.
Summit outshot Pingry 33-19, and Hilltopper senior goaltender Julia Oppici made 16 stops. Junior Lily Neilan was Summit's 'master provider' on the day, earning assists on three Hilltopper tallies. Cornell, Hannigan, sophomore Skye Gilbert and Rubinshteyn (2) had the other helpers.
En route to their 6-1 record, Summit has outscored their opponents 53-17. Rubinshteyn now has 15 goals, including three Hat Tricks and a four-goal game.
Summit next faces Kent Place December 14 at RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House in Newark. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
