SUMMIT, NJ - The Holiday Handcraft Sale, benefiting the impoverished garbage collecting families of Cairo -- the Zabbaleen Community -- celebrates its 11th year in Summit with a special holiday sale December 5-6.

The event will be held each day at the American Red Cross New Jersey Crossroads, located at 695 Springfield Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Merchandise will include handmade quilts, totes, rugs, placemats, unique holiday items and a selection of paper goods.  All proceeds go directly to support these families in providing early education for the children, and opening a new path of life for their parents.

Summit resident Marilyn Pfaltz has sponsored this sale along with her Bryn Mawr College classmate, native Egyptian Sue Habachy, and Habachy's sister, Nimet.  The sisters originated the first sale in New York City 23 years ago, and Its annual tradition is a large part of a remarkable "up-from-poverty" story.

The current turmoil in Egypt has closed down the traditional sales outlet for these crafts in Cairo, and drastically affected the income for the two schools at the Community Center where the women produce the goods.  Summit’s contribution is increasingly important in support of, and changing the lives of, the Zabbaleen Community.

For further information, call the Red Cross at 908 / 273-2076.
