SUMMIT, NJ - Statistics indicate that one in five low-income families are unable to get their children involved in organized sports due to rising equipment expenses. As a result, underserved children are three times less likely to participate in sports than their peers.
Hilltop City youth athletes are aiming to help do something about that unfortunate dynamic when they hold a New and Used Sports Equipment Drive May 21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.., at Soldiers Memorial Field.
All collected equipment will be donated to Leveling the Playing Field, Inc., a non-profit organization which collects and distributes gear to youth centers, schools, and recreation league teams in underserved communities across the country. The Equipment Drive will be held rain or shine.
All sports equipment is generally accepted. A full list of accepted items can be viewed at summitcommunityprograms.com. Tax receipts will be available upon request.
