Summit Area YMCA Awards Dwight Giles Scholarship to 5 High School Teens

The Summit Area YMCA’s commitment to youth development is to ensure that all youth have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.   Achievers, our innovative teen program, motivates and encourages young adults by giving them the support, direction, and opportunities to pursue their personal, academic, and professional goals.  Strong adult role models from the community make all the difference in the life of a child — and make our program highly successful. Participants have opportunities to attend college tours, receive corporate mentoring and to experience career clusters and so much more!

This year, five students of the junior and senior class were awarded the Dwight Giles Scholarship at the Summit YMCA. Three Senior Recipients each received $2,000 toward their post-secondary education as well as two junior recipients who each received $1,000 in an Apple gift card. Recipients included Senior Achievers, Sanford Brown, who will be attending Syracuse University in the fall; Johnnie Antonucci who will be attending Scranton University; and Miajah Small who will be attending Rutgers University. The two junior recipients included Tara Moriello from Union County Vocational School and Jada Donatien who attends Millburn High School.

The Dwight Giles Scholarship is an achievement based scholarship centered on students’ academic performance, attendance at Achievers meetings, positive contributions to the Y and/or community, a reflection essay, and two recommendations from mentors in their community.
