A state-wide program promoting healthy lifestyles for children comes to the Y!

[SUMMIT, NJ] (OCTOBER 26, 2017)— As a part of our dedication to youth development and healthy living, the Summit Area YMCA provides the Healthy U curriculum that teaches children in our communities to adapt healthy living habits that will follow them into adulthood. Healthy U, a statewide initiative introducing the award winning CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) curriculum, is aimed at addressing childhood obesity in the preschool, afterschool, and elementary school setting.  The CATCH Kids Club program includes nutrition education as well as 30 minutes of non-competitive physical activity at least three times a week.

Healthy U will kick-off at all YMCA locations on October 26th with an opportunity for students ages 5 through 12 who are enrolled in the Summit Area YMCA’s afterschool programs, to plant indoor gardens and sample the fruits, vegetables and herbs they will be planting. Healthy U lessons on planting and caring for gardens will continue throughout the year and parents will receive GO recipes with ingredients from the gardens.

The GO-SLOW-WHOA model is a comprehensive list of foods created by CATCH researchers and registered dietitians.  It is a system for selecting healthy foods that can be easily understood by children, and its purpose is to teach them and their families about healthy food choices, balance, and moderation.

In a recent letter the Summit Area YMCA received showing his support for Healthy U, Governor Chris Christie commented, “I understand that Healthy U has positively impacted more than 90,000 young residents of our State, while also educating our communities about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.  As Governor, I commend the organizations’ efforts to encourage and inform New Jersey residents of the vital importance of maintaining a healthy and balanced life.”

At various offsite Summit Area YMCA locations, students can participate in taste tests of various GO foods and design their own Healthy U activities. Every participating Healthy U student will be asked to make a 2017 Healthy U pledge and a copy will be sent home as well to encourage healthy living habits in their daily living.
