SUMMIT, NJ - There are many things that define a community and the citizens that comprise it: Shared values, interests and goals; The respect and tolerance for and of one's fellow man; A willingness to look out for one another, and to selflessly pitch in when help is needed.

Contained in all of those tenets is the story of -- and the opportunity for -- Summit to take care of 'one of its own'.

A member of the Montclair State University Athletic Hall of Fame, the Union County Baseball Hall of Fame, and recently inducted to the Summit High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Leroy Horn is a legend in Summit, not only for his own athletic exploits, but also for his dedication to passing along his passion for and knowledge of myriad sports to generations of Hilltop City's most precious resource -- its youth.

A longtime resident and football and baseball coach to many, Horn recently suffered a stroke and, unfortunately, is now recovering from cancer surgery. The resulting hospitalization and developing medical complications have proven to be overwhelming, and he is in need of the community's help.

Unable to work and without medical insurance, Horn finds himself in an awkward and vulnerable position.

In an effort to help Horn get back on his feet, Summit's Other Fellow First Foundation, along with a group of Summit residents -- including Rick Carbone, Laura O'Rourke and Greg Elliott -- along with the Summit Police and Fire Departments, the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, the Summit High School Football Team and the Summit Area YMCA have all joined forces to help one of Summit's own in a true time of need.

Their hope is to increase community awareness and orchestrate a number of fundraisers in an attempt to help Horn deal with his daunting financial challenges.

Over the coming month before Thanksgiving, the 'Help Leroy Team' has arranged a number of local fundraising events for Horn’s benefit:

  • A Leroy contribution campaign at the Summit Elks
  • A fundraising basketball double-header: The Summit High School Football Team vs. Summit Police and the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad vs. Summit Fire Department
  • A meatloaf fundraiser on Tuesday, November 21, at the Summit Diner

On Saturday, November 18, from 7:30 - 10 p.m. at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School, two fundraiser basketball games -- one between the Summit Police Department vs. the Hilltopper Football team, followed by a game between the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad and the Summit Fire Department -- will take place. Minimum donations to attend will be: children 18 and under - $5, adults - $10, and families - $20.

A Meatloaf Dinner fundraiser will be served up at the Summit Diner on Tuesday, November 21, from 7 - 9 p.m., with just 32 seats available for the minimum $500 / plate donation event.

The event will include cocktails, the 'galaxy's greatest meatloaf' -- trimmed with mash potatoes, string beans and gravy -- and a slice of 'Get Well Soon Cake' from Natale's Summit Bakery. Rounding out the festivities will be a group of waiter and bartenders comprised of Summit luminaries.

To RSVP, contact Brett Haire at bhaire@Braveasset.com or call 908-522-8822.

Tax-deductible checks should be made out to the Other Fellow First Foundation and mailed to: Brett Haire - Brave Asset Management, 47 Summit Avenue, Summit, NJ 07901.

In the event none of these events are possible, those interested in helping are encouraged to visit a GoFundMe page that has been established, located at gofundme.com/leroy-horns-medical-bills, and make a donation to help with medical bills.

Is FAANG Long in the Tooth?

Investors love to rally around a stock story. Today it’s all about the FAANG stocks. Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Netflix (NFLX) and Google (GOOG) are a major reason why the S&P 500 rallied so much in 2017. Mr. Market is convinced the FAANGs are impervious to a sell-off. “Its different this time” is ringing loud and clear, but will the outcome really be that ...

Let the Games Begin

I am truly awed by the Olympics.  Watching these superb young athletes on TV inspires me to renew my membership to the gym and pursue my lifelong dream of taking home the gold.

The problem is that in my deluded head, I can see actually see myself standing atop the podium.  I am wrapped in a puffy designer ski coat with a huge piece of bling slung around my neck ...
