SUMMIT, NJ - It took just a quarter of an hour for the Summit Fire Department (SFD) to extinguish a residential electrical fire in the early-morning hours of August 24.
Responding to a report of structure fire at 9 Cottage Lane at 2:10 a.m., the SFD discovered fire in basements of both 7 and 9 Cottage Lane, resulting from an electrical wire short in circuit boxes currently under repair by Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L). The fires were contained to the area of origin, and declared under control at approximately 2:25 a.m..
No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.
The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist residents with temporary overnight shelter and, during investigation, a safe home issue was discovered at 5 Cottage Lane. City of Summit safe home inspectors were contacted and responded to the address to investigate.
The Summit Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Millburn Fire Department.
