SUMMIT, NJ - Playing regulation games for the first time in more than 22 months, the Summit High School Girls and Boys Varsity Lacrosse Teams each dominated their respective opponents to earn lopsided home wins. The Girls thumped Immaculate Heart Academy 17-6 on the Upper Turf Field while the Boys -- playing just down 'The Hiill' at almost the exactly same time -- dropped Columbia 15-5 at Tatlock Field.
Trailing in First Half, Summit Girls Varsity Pulls Away
Down 2-1 approaching the midway point of the first half, Summit scored eight of the next nine goals to take command versus Immaculate Heart Academy (IHA).
Junior Kit Zanelli had four goals, sophomore Jane Freeman had three goals and two assists, and sophomore Lily Spinner had a Hat Trick to pace the Maroon and White offense. Juniors Maddie Busam and Caitlin Walsh split time between the pipes, with each making two stops.
Junior Maggie DeFabio (2), freshman Lauren Riley (2), junior Ashley Thomas (2) and senior captain Anna Gohring all found the back of the net for the Hilltoppers (1-0).
Summit led 10-3 at the break, tacked on seven more over the final 25 minutes and ended up outshooting the Blue Eagles 31-10.
Next up for the Hilltoppers is an April 21 matchup versus Morristown. Game time on the UTF is set for 4 p.m.
Boys Cruise Past Columbia
Senior captains Luke Dinola and Michael Bonomo each potted four goals and junior Dylan Sebastian added a Hat Trick as the Hilltoppers overwhelmed the visiting Cougars. Senior captain Hunter Schluter (2) and juniors Conor St.Amant and John Murray also scored, while senior Charlie Milne-Home (2) and Will O'Connell (4) shared the goalie duties and combined for six stops.
The 'Top was on top 9-2 at the half, with the final three Columbia goals coming in the final quarter. The Hilltoppers enjoyed brawny advantages in shots (38-8) and ground balls (27-10).
Summit (1-0) now travels to Cranford on April 21 to face their second-consecutive set of Cougars. Face-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
