SUMMIT, NJ - Coming off a solid 2016 campaign that saw them compile an 11-6 record, the Summit High School Varsity Softball Team returns just two full-time members of that squad, and will look to those anchors -- along with a host of newcomers -- to build on their success.

Standout pitcher Sami Auerbach and offensive machine Casey Nardino provide the nucleus as senior captains, with significant contributions expected from seniors Alexa Carlson and Danielle Medina.

Juniors Camille DellaPiazza, the Thompson twins -- Taylor and Veronica, not the 1980s band -- and Olivia Elko will also be a big part of the mix.

First-year varsity players include sophomore Jessica Natunen, along with freshmen Abby Thompson and Gianna Acitelli.

All the fresh faces will have to adjust to the heightened level of Varsity action, but Head Coach Tim Simo is optimistic, saying, "We have a pitcher and a catcher. We have some key pieces. We just need the newcomers to step up. We should win a lot of games this year.”

The team has a new set of opponents this year as well as they take on rivals New Providence and Oak Knoll as well as other Union County foes like Rahway, Roselle Catholic and AL Johnson.

So far, having played one game, the result is promising -- The Maroon & White crushed New Providence 13-0 in the their season opener. In that contest, Auerbach went the distance, striking out eight and allowing just two hits while Natunen had a game-high three RBI.
