SUMMIT, NJ – A Summit man is hospitalized this morning after being struck last night by a drunk driver. Officials say his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.
Dennis Balasabas, 39, was crossing Summit Avenue at Union Place, in the marked crosswalk, around 5:30 p.m. Monday when Mark Boettcher, 51, of Springfield struck him, according to Lt. David L. Richel.
Richel said Boettcher was arrested at the scene and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Initial reports indicated that Balasabas may have sustained life-threatening injuries, so the Union County Fatal Accident Team assisted in the investigation. The Summit Fire Department and Rescue Squad also responded to the scene.
Tuesday night’s accident is the second time in a year that a pedestrian was struck crossing Union Place. Just before Christmas in 2011, Short Hills resident Cynthia Pelham-Webb was killed as she crossed Union Place near Maple Street.
