SUMMIT, NJ - Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School (LCJSMS) will have to make room on the walls of its Main Gym for a new banner.

The school's Girls’ Softball Team just concluded a perfect season, the unbeaten campaign representing the first flawless year for a softball team in the school’s history. In her eighth season at the helm, head coach Christine Bohan has steadily been building a strong program that is loaded with talent brought up from the local Summit Girls Fastpitch Softball League.

Rocket-armed eighth grader, Abby Thompson anchored an impressive pitching staff and, in one of the sweetest victories of the season, she fanned 21 batters in a 4-1 victory over Long Hill Central, a team that had not lost a regular season game since 2012, and had beaten Summit 19-4 last year.

Strong offense and tenacious defense by the girls resulted in three shutout wins against Hillside (26-0), Scotch Plains (16-0) and West Orange (21-0).  According to Bohan, “Our girls play year round and face all kinds of pitching, which prepared us for the rises and screwballs we saw at the plate. This is a very hard working, determined group of softball players who love the mental and physical challenges softball presents.  They are starved for more.”

The team will be losing four eighth graders next season: Thompson, Gianna Acitelli, Rebecca del Rosso and Ariel Shultz, however, a strong 7th Grade nucleus of nine players remains, and will be bolstered by promising 6th grade talent.

'Coach Bo' has high expectations for the team’s future. “The Summit Middle School program has been on the rise for the past few years. We have now risen to the ranks of top contenders for next year’s Union County Conference title.”

Bohan added, “The girls this year pushed each other in practice the way I have seen high school and college athletes do. Through their continued dedication to softball, together, this particular group of athletes will continue to put Summit Softball on the map for years to come.”

A Royal Pain

I went to a big wedding over the weekend.  It was in England.

I like to think I was invited, but according to the Royal Guards and the Thames Valley Police I was not.  But more about that later.

You see, not too long ago I received an evite addressed to me from H&M@royalwedbot.co.uk.  Curiously, it was in my spam folder with a warning message. For an evite it was pretty ...
