With the 67th Annual Fourth of July Celebration just days away, the Summit Police Athletic League (PAL) is preparing for their big debut in front of tens of thousands of families from Summit and various other neighboring communities.  As always, the day-long festivities will conclude with one of the best fireworks shows in the region.  This year, the Summit PAL, in particular the PAL Fishing Derby Committee will proudly join members of the Summit Fourth of July & Celebration Committee, Inc, as well as members of the Summit Department of Community Programs (DCP) on stage in order to “Push the Plunger” and set off the 67th Annual Grand Fireworks Display.

Playing such a major role in the Mayor’s Annual Fourth of July Celebration is a well-deserved honor for the Summit PAL.  In years past, this honor has been bestowed upon Summit’s EMS, two hero lifeguards, as well as Hurricane Sandy volunteers.  The Summit PAL Fishing Derby Committee was specifically chosen by Mayor Ellen Dickson to honor all of their hard work and dedication to the Summit Community.   This past April, the PAL Fishing Derby Committee celebrated “60 years of great fishing” at the Summit Municipal Golf Course.  With such longstanding traditions, it is plain to see that the Summit PAL’s presence has become ingrained in the Summit Community and will likely continue to have a positive impact on Summit’s youth for many years to come.

The PAL is a non-profit charitable organization run by a volunteer board comprised of both Summit residents and Summit Police Department officers.  Throughout the year, the PAL is host to a number of memorable community events including the Halloween Parade, the Easter Egg Hunt, and the Pet Show to name just a few.  In addition, the PAL manages programs such as the nationally recognized D.A.R.E. program, provides financial assistance to Summit children who might not otherwise be able to afford to participate in Summit athletic programs, and grants a number of academic scholarships to Summit High School graduates.
