When Hawke and Bernstein met at a dinner party hosted by a mutual friend, they got involved in a conversation about the challenges and rewards of life as an artist. Hawke was deeply touched by Bernstein’s views and suggested making a documentary.
Bernstein started playing the piano as a little boy and, by the time he turned 15, he was teaching it to others. He enjoyed a long and illustrious career as a performer before he gave it up to devote himself to helping others develop their own gifts.

In the film’s opening scene, Bernstein practices in his studio. When the audience sees him working with students in private lessons and master classes, he’s teaching the nuts and bolts of technique: the choreography of the hands on the keyboard. Bernstein’s magnificent playing resonates throughout the film.

The film has been an official selection of top film festivals including Telluride, Montreal, and New York City to great acclaim.
