SUMMIT, NJ - Partnering with the Summit Police Athletic League (PAL), a group of kind-hearted and determined community members from the Hilltop City have initiated a 'Front Line Appreciation Group' (FLAG), which purchases individually-packed meals and food items locally -- thereby supporting local merchants -- and then delivers them to healthcare and public safety personnel in Summit.
The beneficiaries of the benevolence are the Emergency Room (ER) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) professionals at Summit's Overlook Medical Center as well as the members of the City of Summit Fire and Police Departments along with the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad. In particular, the healthcare workers at Overlook are enduring an unfathomably chaotic environment due to the coronavirus pandemic, with many working around the clock access to the Hospital's cafeteria.
The effort raises money through a link on the Summit PAL site -- located at summitpal.org/donate.asp -- where individuals can make tax-deductible donations that fund the effort. Those visiting the site simply need to select the 'add special instructions' box and specify 'FLAG'.
Meals are then sourced at local restaurants and paid for by the donations. Within 24 hours of establishing the initiative on Facebook, $20,000 was raised.
The FLAG effort began on Long Island, NY, and has been mirrored in other locations, including Chatham.
