SUMMIT, NJ - The Summit Taxpayers Association (STA), is inviting Hilltop City residents to attend the February 23 Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders meeting in Elizabeth.

The STA describes itself as "a non-partisan, non-profit, all-volunteer organization whose purpose is to monitor the use of taxes, initiate action to reduce excessive taxation, eliminate wasteful government spending, and encourage the wise and common sense use of taxes at all levels of government."

Billed as the STA's first-ever 'Night of Action', the Association -- in its invitation -- is soliciting residents to "calmly and respectfully ask our elected Freeholders to keep Summit property tax increases at or below the 2% New Jersey State cap. Each meeting reserves time for public comment on any issue a member of the public feels may be of concern to residents of the County."

The invitation further states that "Summit taxpayers were assessed $38.5MM by Union County in 2016, and have been assessed more than $295MM over the last eleven years, a 64% increase! Our Union County Assessment crowds out critical expenditures in our schools and city, now taking 30% of our budget. We need to control our Union County taxes in order to be able to fund our schools and city services."

Interested parties are directed to RSVP by contacting summitnjtaxpayers@gmail.com and that, should enough people wish to attend, the STA will explore meeting at Summit's City Hall and taking a bus to and from the meeting.
