SUMMIT, NJ - The Hilltop City edition of "National Night Out", a nationwide program that was introduced in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch in an effort to heighten awareness and strengthen participation in local anti-crime efforts, will take place August 1 on the Village Green beginning at 6 p.m.
Summit will join thousands of communities across the United States to celebrate NNO, a community-building event that takes place annually on the first Tuesday of August. Featuring a variety of state, federal, and municipal level agencies, NNO provides a chance for neighborhoods to come together with the men and women who protect and serve them.
Displays and demonstrations by the US Coast Guard, US National Guard, Union County SWAT, NJ State Police, the FBI, and K-9 along with Summit Police, Fire, EMS, and Public Works will take place on the Village Green. Summit's "National Night Out" will once again feature the 'Dunk-a-Cop Tank', the proceeds of which this year will benefit Madelyn Rose Smith, a 21-month-old Boonton Township resident who was diagnosed with a rare mitochondrial disease before the age of one.
Food trucks, bounce houses, and other amusements will open at 6 p.m., followed by the always-popular Chris Clark Bicycle Stunt Show at 6:15 p.m. and the annual 'Blessing of the Badges' at 6:45 p.m.. "The Kicks" will perform on the main stage at 7 p.m. Free hot dogs will be provided at the Summit Police Athletic League (PAL) food cart.
The event is sponsored by The Grand Summit Hotel and the Summit PAL.
