Ten Days in May

Congregation Beth Hatikvah in Summit invites members of the public to get to know the “CBH Family” in all its diversity during ten days of events May 12th through May 21st:

  • For kids and their families: Lag B’Omer Celebration, May 13th 10:00 am

  • For Teens:  Easy Get-Together with other Jewish young people in the community in the home of one of our members, Saturday evening, May 20th.  An easy-going, low pressure way for kids to break the ice and have fun together.  Call for more information
  • For foodies: The Pickle Guy, Wednesday, May 17th, 7:30 pm

Jeffrey Yoskowitz of Gefilteria-fame in Brooklyn caps a 25-city tour promoting his new cookbook, "The Gefilte Manifesto: A New Wave of Jewish Cuisine Inspired by the Old World Kitchen. We’ll hear about the book and the research he put into it and sample some of the recipes

  • For activists: Social Justice Shabbat – Food Insecurity in Our Community, Friday, May 12th, 7:30 pm

Amanda Block, Director of GRACE’s Refrigerator, will discuss the impact of food insecurity on the working poor in the Summit area, and how GRACE’s Refrigerator is addressing the issue.  Our own teens Hannah Wetter and Amalya Cassak will also speak about their work with the local food assistance program, SHIP.

  • For adult learners: Talmud study group, Saturday, May 13th, noon and Torah study, Saturday, May 20th, 9:00 am

Lively discussions of our foundational texts, what they meant when written and what they mean to us today

  • For the curious: They Searched and Returned, Memoirs of Secular Jews Returning to Orthodoxy, Saturday, May 20th, 9:45 am

Presenter Jeremy Garber will discuss how the authors wrestle with the demands of orthodox strictures such as modesty and the prohibition against "lashon hara," speaking with an evil tongue, as they seek meaning in traditional observance.

  • For thinkers and feelers: A Land Twice Promised, Sunday, May 21st, 4:00 pm

Noa Baum, an Israeli author and storyteller who began a heartfelt dialogue with a Palestinian woman while living in the US, weaves together their memories and their mothers’ stories.  She creates a moving testimony illuminating the complex and contradictory history and emotions that surround Jerusalem for Israelis and Palestinians alike.  Suggested ticket donation: $18

  • For everyone:  “Togetherness Shabbat” Community Dinner and Service, Friday, May 20th, 6:30 pm

Once a month we all share a meal full of interesting flavors and specialties, before an abbreviated Shabbat service and dessert.  You are welcome!

Saturday Morning Service, May 21st, 9:30 am – Experience the joy of a CBH-style Bar Mitzvah and full Shabbat service

For the CBH community, Judaism is a force that draws us and our families together, whether Jewish or non-Jewish, man or woman, straight or LGBTQ, with all our beautiful differences and shared values.  We invite you to join us for an hour or two and get to know us.
