ELIZABETH, NJ - The rainbow flag, a symbol of pride and independence, is flying high above the Union County Courthouse in recognition of June as LGBTQ Pride Month.
This event -- hosted by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Office of LGBTQ Services, Department of Human Services -- brought dignitaries and people from all over New Jersey to the steps of the Union County Courthouse on the afternoon of June 4, reinforcing Union County's support of the LGBTQ community.
With a large crowd in attendance on the front steps of the Union County Courthouse, Freeholder Chairman Sergio Granados emceed the event with guest speakers of New Jersey State Senator Nicholas Scutari; Maria Carvalho, President of the Elizabeth Board of Education; Danielle King, Hyacinth AIDS Foundation; Officer Tamiko Brooks, Union County Sheriffs Office LGBTQ Liaison; and Hannah Leiberman, PFLAG North Jersey.
The ceremony featured a performance of “This is Me” from The Greatest Showman by students of Elizabeth’s Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy A cappella Chorus after which the flag was raised.
