SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Peter Tierney, a standout athlete during his years at Union Catholic and an award-winning tennis coach at Summit High School, will be the recipient of the Alumni Award when he's inducted into the Union Catholic (UC) Hall of Fame on Saturday, Sept. 30.

A member of UC’s first graduating class in 1966, Tierney was a captain of the baseball and basketball teams at the school. He was the leading scorer on the basketball team for two years, and was chosen as the first ever "Mr. Union Catholic."

Tierney, who had a short stint as a teacher and coach at UC, has led Summit to four state titles in boys tennis, and he was chosen as the 2014 Star-Ledger Boys State Tennis Coach of the Year. He was also named The Star-Ledger’s Boys Basketball State Coach of the Year in 1994, and has received numerous teaching awards during his illustrious career.
