SUMMIT, NJ - Girls Varsity Field Hockey player Julia Washburn and Boys Varsity Soccer striker Eric Reyes have been named Summit High School Athletes of the Week, presented by The Alternative Press of Summit, for the week ending October 27.

Each week throughout the school year, one girl and boy athlete will be honored for distinguishing herself / himself in the arena of competition, in the classroom, and for demonstrating exemplary, Hilltopper-caliber sportsmanship and leadership qualities.

Washburn had two goals and three assists during the week, and has totaled 20 goals and 18 assists on the season.  “She is our play maker on the field, and go-to person on corners. She is a true leader and team player.," said Coach Jen Schwarzenbek.  The Field Hockey team has compiled an impressive 12-4-2 record, and opened the State Sectional Playoffs with a 7-0 win over Lakeland Regional.

Reyes scored on three of the five shots he took against Roselle, and he also added an assist -- for a four-point performance -- in the victory.  He followed up his hat-trick performance with the game-winning goal in overtime versus Scotch Plains-Fanwood, the Hilltoppers first win over the Raiders in 35 years.  For the week, his five points led the team, the County and North Jersey.

“Eric is a committed soccer player who is supportive in practices and games to his teammates and coaching staff,” said Head Coach Chris Yager.  The Boys Varsity Soccer team has compiled and 9-6-3 record and begin the State Playoffs November 5 at Morris Hills.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
