Steven Spurr, Chair, Summit Republicans, could not be more wrong in his April 28th letter condemning Representative Tom Malinowski for failing to deliver for the communities in the 7th Congressional District. Representative Malinowski is spearheading the effort to pass H.R. 6467, the “Coronavirus Community Relief Act.”   The Act is intended to provide financial relief to the smaller communities left out of previous legislation.

The notion that Rep. Malinowski is not delivering for Summit is ludicrous. Rep. Malinowski stated recently, “I will continue to advocate relentlessly for adequate state and local assistance in our next COVID-19 bill.”  The support across the 74 communities located in the 7th district has been extensive and bipartisan. Most important for Mr. Spurr to acknowledge is that the support across the 7th district includes a number of Republican lawmakers, locally Mayor Morgan of New Providence and Mayor Smith of Scotch Plains. Unfortunately, many Republicans took this appearance as partisan politics at its worst. I think Mr. Spurr would better serve our community by recognizing the efforts of Representative Malinowski and assist his fellow Republicans in building support for rapid passage of H.R. 6467.

To quote from the poem by columnist and author Damian Barr, “We are not all in the same boat, but we are all in the same storm”.  We need to weather this storm together, not create partisan divide that does not help anyone, regardless of what boat they are in.
