SUMMIT, NJ - The Christ Child Society of Summit (CCS) has awarded Jean Fiory with the 2015 Mary Virginia Merrick Award. Kathryn Colao, CCS Co-President, presented the honor to Fiory at its Annual Baby Shower.

The Award is given to one of CCS's members who exemplifies the spirit of their founder, Mary Virginia Merrick, with her devotion to serving children, and her dedication to the Christ Child Society.

"Most known for her steadfast dedication to the layette program, Jean cares deeply about the quality of her work and the presentation of the clothing and items that are given to the families served by the Christ Child Society," said Colao.

The Annual Baby Shower, attended by more than 100 members and guests gathered at a mass at St. Teresa’s Memorial Hall celebrated by Father Gregory Salamone, and was followed by lunch catered by What a Dish of Summit.

The event, started nine years ago, collects donations of baby items and funds that are used to create layettes that are donated to families in need from Overlook and Morristown hospitals. Lisa Lielblock, a nurse at Overlook Hospital's clinic ward, spoke at the event and expressed how the donated layettes touched area families in need.

"New moms are so shocked to receive such a kind gift given to them by strangers. Thank you for all your work, it is truly appreciated,” said Lielblock.

Event Co-chairs Julie Vlass and Shelia Schlageter continue to collect layette items such as outfits, pajamas, receiving blankets, and onesies in newborn and 3-month sizes. To make a donation, or for more information about the Christ Child Society of Summit, visit
