Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center has become the first hospital to implement the BEACON Advanced Energy Laser System, a unique tissue-sparing, CO2 laser-driven system which enables physicians to conduct complex surgeries in space-restricted areas of the body with greater accuracy and precision than ever before.

While flexible fiber-based CO2 surgery has long been a method of safe and precise laser treatment for complex head and neck surgeries at Morristown Medical Center, the new BEACON Laser System from OmniGuide, a leader in advanced surgical technology, “offers the entire range of advanced lasing modes and settings that my surgical cases require in a very accessible manner,” said Dr. Tom Thomas, Director of Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery and Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) at the Leonard B. Kahn Head and Neck Cancer Institute at Morristown Medical Center.  In addition to providing a user-friendly interface that enables the ability to switch between different modes of lasing based on the density of the tissue being worked with, “the BEACON laser is easy for my OR team to position, maneuver, and operate,” Thomas said.

In the challenging and complex area of head and neck surgery, where surgeons like Dr. Thomas strive to use incision-free, minimally-invasive approaches to accessing tumors wherever possible, “technology like this CO2 laser-driven system is excellent in its ability to keep a tight margin without causing collateral damage to surrounding tissue,” said Thomas, who was specially trained in transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) during his residency at Washington University in Saint Louis, MO.  “The BEACON system is a precise cutting tool that removes cancer while keeping function intact and drives quicker recovery times for patients.”

According to Thomas, addition of the new FDA-approved BEACON system to the hospital’s broad range of minimally-invasive approaches to treating cancer (which include traditional open surgery and robotic surgery) ushers in a new day for the facility, which was recently ranked the #1 regional hospital in New Jersey by U.S. News & World Report.

With the new BEACON system, “Morristown Medical Center now has a complete arsenal of tools to treat head and neck cancer and patients can feel confident that they don’t have to travel far to obtain the most comprehensive cancer care,” Thomas said.  “We have the full range of surgical tools and skills and our multi-disciplinary team at MMC represents the gold standard.”
