Robert Leisher, Former Summit Recreation Director, Passes Away

SUMMIT, NJ - Robert D. Leisher who, for 34 years, served as the Director of Recreation for the City of Summit, passed away May 2 at age 83.

Born in Chambersburg, PA, Leisher was a 1949 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School where he played on the basketball team.   A U.S. Navy veteran,he served honorably from 1949 -1953.  

Leisher attended the University of Hawaii, and then the Pennsylvania State University.  He graduated from Penn State in 1957, and was basketball team captain during his senior year.

He was Director of Recreation for the City of Summit until his retirement in 1991.  Leisher was a past president of the NJ Recreation and Parks Association, and a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #600 in Chambersburg, the Penn State Varsity ‘S’ Club, the Penn State Alumni Association, and the South Central Chapter Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Leisher is survived by five children; sixteen grandchildren; one great- granddaughter; two brothers, Arnold and Eber Leisher; one sister, OcieLee McClure; and numerous nieces and nephews.
