SUMMIT, NJ - In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Washington Elementary School, artist and muralist Caren Frost Olmsted and the students are creating a centennial mural in the school.

Frost Olmsted, who works for the Arts Council of Morris County, said it took her three days to draw everything, but she researched and looked through many old books and photo albums to figure out what images she should design. She has been in the profession for 10 years and paints murals at schools, churches and community centers.

Each section of the wall captures a different piece of history. There are pictures of kids learning how to write script, children eating in a cafeteria, how the school looked in 1913 and even a painting of students painting a mural. She said her goal was to have the story of the school viewed through art and she hopes she did so.

Working with the students has been wonderful, Frost Olmsted said.

“It’s great. It’s a total blast,” she said.

All of the kids in the school participated all week and, for most of them, this was the first time they ever painted a mural. On Friday morning, Dec. 7, first grade students, with the help of Art teacher Jaimie Bass, had a lot of fun painting.

Both Joshua Jones and Jack Bronikowski said it was fun and pretty easy to do.

“It was awesome, “Jones said.

Bass said it’s been a thrill to see her students paint; however, the children regret that they only get to paint once, she said.

“It’s been really awesome,” Bass aid. “They’re all having a really good time.”
