SUMMIT, NJ - The Summit Free Public Library's annual 'Holiday Food Drive' is underway, collecting donations for Summit Helping Its People (SHIP) through December 13. Non-perishable grocery items that are most urgently needed include canned meat and fish; canned soups and stews; peanut butter (in plastic jars); boxed pasta and rice; powdered milk; infant formula; canned vegetables and fruits.
The Holiday Food Drive is sponsored by the Libraries of Union County Consortium (LUCC) A Collection bin is located in the main room of the Library, and library staff will route 100% of the donations to SHIP.
The mission of SHIP -- which relies on the local community for financial support and receives no government funding -- is to feed the homeless and at-risk homeless people in Summit and assist participants in obtaining additional support services. The nonprofit organization features a team of committed volunteers from the community and provides various programs including a weekday breakfast / brown bag lunch program and a weekend fellowship dinner program.
