SUMMIT, NJ - Pathways 'Team SOS NJ' dragon boat team will host its annual is season kick-off meeting for returning and prospective paddlers on Tuesday, March 10, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at the Parsippany Lake Clubhouse. Attendees will meet team members and learn more about the sport of dragon boating.
Now in its 13th season, the "floating support group" is comprised of female cancer survivors and supporters. Participants join in the fun and camaraderie from 6 - 7 p.m. every Monday night -- during the months of April through October -- at Lake Parsippany, where they will get their blood flowing and bond with other survivors. Pathways 'Team SOS NJ' is affiliated with the NJ Dragon Boat Club, run by Coach Ellen Law, an experienced dragon boat athlete and US National Steerer.
All women with a history of cancer are welcome regardless of fitness level -- no experience is needed. Members can also participate in dragon boat festivals generally held in NY, NJ and PA. Participating in Team SOS practices and races helps women with cancer make meaning of their experience.
Breast cancer survivors from the team are excitedly planning their participation in the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission dragon boat festival in New Zealand in July 2022. This event attracts thousands of breast cancer survivors from over 30 countries around the world to compete against their “sister” teams as they share in the ancient sport of dragon boating.
In the spirit and tradition of teamwork in dragon boating, Pathways 'Team SOS NJ' members find they gain stamina and vitality through paddling with women who are “all in the same boat”.
