As part of Summit Psychological Services’ commitment to contributing to the health of our community. Dr. Jeffrey Kahn, Founding Director, will be offering a free workshop November 20, beginning at 7:30 p.m., presenting valuable information on smoking and its dangers, as well as the benefits of stopping. Understanding this addiction, what makes it hard to quit, and how to avoid relapse will all be addressed in the Workshop. The QuitSmart® Program, which is used by SPS for smoking cessation, will be explained. Anyone who would like to utilize the QuitSmart® program led by Dr. Kahn will be able to register at the Workshop. Because of the potentially life-saving impact of the program, no person will be excluded from participation because of financial hardship.
In brief, cigarette smoking is an addiction to the mood-altering chemical nicotine, which former Surgeon General C. Everett Coop felt was more addictive than heroin. In addition, nicotine is a legal and somewhat accessible drug, without the immediate risks and consequences of illegal drugs. For many smokers, their lives have not yet become “unmanageable” which is usually what prompts addicts to attempt to stop. Cigarette smokers must stop because of the risk that in the future their lives may become unmanageable, sometimes too late to reverse the damage. For people who have smoked their whole life, half die from it (almost 500,000 per year). Besides lung cancer, there are many diseases caused by inhaling the 7,000 chemicals - including arsenic, cyanide, and radioactive polonium-210 - contained in the smoke.
There are many benefits to stopping smoking in addition to potentially saving your life. (Dr. Robert Shipley, the developer of the QuitSmart® method, lists over 50). In short, the benefits of stopping smoking include life, health, and wealth.
Dr. Kahn is a Licensed Psychologist and has been a certified QuitSmart® facilitator for over 20 years. He is also a Diplomate in Psychotherapy, a Master Addiction Counselor and a Certified Group Psychotherapist. All of these specialties combine to increase a successful outcome for the group participants. The last smoking cessation group he led had 100 of its participants smoke-free at six months after the end of the program.
It would give Dr, Kahn great pleasure to inform you of the way to successfully make the best change in your life, for yourself and everyone who cares about you!
